Naik family loses sole son

Pulwama: Former SPO who was killed in his native village on Wednesday afternoon was the lone son of Nayak family.
Showkat Ahmad Nayak, son of Mohammad Yousuf Naik of Pinglena was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on a road in his native village.
Eyewitnesses said that unidentified gunmen who were boarding a vehicle fired upon Showkat and escaped from the spot.
Showkat received serious bullet injuries on back side of his head and died within minutes, they said.
Locals said that he was first working as Special Police Officer (SPO) for few years and later he got recruited into Territorial Army.
After working in Territorial Army for some time, he was asked to stay home by suspected militants and from last six months, he was at his home, they said.
“We don’t know why and who killed him,” said one of his relatives however, his family members refused to talk to media.
Belonging to a poor family, Showkat according to locals is survived by a sister and old aged parents. Among parents his father is said to be mentally unwell.
However, Army refuted the media reports, saying that he never took oath as a soldier.
A Defence spokesman said that Showkat never took oath as a soldier. He said Nayak, resident of Pinglina was enrolled on 15 Jan 2018 in Territorial Army (TA) and went to JAK LI Regimental Center on 21 Mar 2018.
He however, said that Nayak went on three days leave on 14 Sep 2018 but he never returned. “He was declared deserter on 17 September 2018,” he said. The spokesman further said that technically, after being declared deserter during training, he is a civilian.
