19,911 teachers were directed to complete their B.Ed courses by March 2019

Srinagar: The school education department has over 19000 untrained teachers across the state who are yet to complete their B.Ed and D.Ed courses initiated by the department two years ago.
As per the official figures, there are around 19,911 graduate untrained in-service teachers which include 10134 in Jammu, 9416 in Kashmir and 361 from Ladakh. All these teachers are registered with IGNOU and have appeared in the B.Ed exams held in the month of December last.
An official said the ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has set a deadline up to March 2019 for the school education department to get all the untrained teachers trained otherwise, as per MHRD guidelines these teachers won’t be allowed to continue in the department.
As per the figures, north Kashmir district Kupwara in Kashmir division has 2112-the highest number of untrained graduate in-service teachers while as Jammu district has the highest number of untrained graduate teachers in Jammu division.
As per the statistics, the J&K state figures at serial number six in terms of number of untrained in-service teachers with strength of more than 27,000-including 14000 in Kashmir.
In July 2017 guidelines were issued by MHRD which gave a deadline to untrained teachers in schools across the country to acquire B.Ed or a diploma in elementary education by March 31 of 2019 to continue in their jobs.
An official said the in-service teachers of the J&K state have only completed one year exam in B.Ed while as registration of second year started in March 2019. “It is a challenging task for the department to get the teachers trained by the end of this month,” an official said.
He said the department has received several reminders from MHRD to send its feedback regarding the training of teachers.
“But the department is dealing with the situation tactfully by saying that all teachers have been registered for B.Ed and D.Ed course. But it is lagging behind to complete the course on time,” an official said.
Few days ago, the IGNOU had started registration of in-service teachers for their second year which openly indicates that the degree won’t be completed within the same month.
State project director Samagra, Arun Kumar Manhas said they are pursuing the case and are likely to get some relaxation from MHRD in extending the deadline by a few months.
“We will try to complete the training of all un-trained teachers within this year,” he said.
