Srinagar: In a significant development, the authorities in Kashmir University (KU) are mulling to do away with the semester system of exams at the graduate level.
An official in the varsity said the administration is deliberating on the issue and formal announcement will be made in coming days.
“The university council has decided to take up the matter with governor’s administration to deliberate on the issue,” he said.
The decision comes in wake of the confrontation faced by the Kashmir University in streamlining the conduct of the semester exams and declaration of their results.
“Post introduction of semester exams, undergraduate degrees are getting delayed. Three years course gets completed in four or five years,” the official said.
Already, there is a perception that Kashmir has limited working days and semester system overburdens the students and teachers by “managing” the exams and deceleration of results.
“From past two years we are combining the exams of the two semesters which is technically against the norms of semester system of exams. So university has decided to formally abolish the semester system exams and reintroduce the annual system of exams again in colleges,” the official said.
In the prevailing circumstances, the semester system overburdens the students and teachers due to which the students and teachers are demanding end to the semester exams.
“The university administration has already decided to club the final two semesters of current final year students in the interest of students so that their courses get completed on time,” the official said.
The official said the university will issue a public notification after taking a final decision on it and seek opinion from all stake holders particularly college principals.
Registrar Kashmir University (KU) Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir said the matter was under discussion at the university level.
“We will make the decision public once we decide to scrap the semester system,” he said without divulging further details.
