Shopian: Army men on Saturday late night shot dead a leopard in Pehlipora village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
A police official said a patrolling party of 44 RR opened fire on the leopard after it ‘attacked’ them in Pehlipora.
The leopard received many bullets on his body due to which he died before wildlife team could reach the spot, he said.
Reports said that on Monday morning, a team of wildlife department rushed to the spot and took the carcass into their custody.
An army official said that they killed the leopard in self defence after the leopard attacked them and injured one of their colleagues.
DFO Wildlife, DR Ifshana said that “we had received information about the presence of leopard in the area before 20 days back after which a team was deputed but after searching for him for three consecutive days, it couldn’t trace the leopard,” she said.
Later, according to her, an advisory was issued, asking people to stay indoors during morning and evening hours.
“Army in their version claimed that they have killed the leopard in retaliation after the leopard attacked them but we will register an FIR against the Army to check to what extent their claims are true,” she said.
