Srinagar: As many as 300 Kashmiri students studying in outside J&K colleges and Universities have fled from the states in wake of the threat perception and are reaching their homes in various groups.
A student body is arranging their stay in the Punjab town wherefrom they are leaving in groups towards the valley. The students are on the run after facing harassment in Dehradun and other states in wake of the attack on CRPF convoy in Pulwama.
Some Kashmiri youths studying in the Uttarakhand capital alleged they were harassed and asked by their landlords to vacate the accommodations fearing attacks on their properties after the attack in Pulwama on Thursday that left 49 CRPF personnel dead.
Over the past two days, nearly 280 students have arrived from Dehradun and up to 30 from Haryana’s Ambala district, said Nasir, a student from Bandipora who is coordinating the travel of the students.
He said nearly 150 of the total students have moved towards Jammu, from where they will head to their homes in Kashmir Valley.
“The students told us they wanted to make a halt in Mohali as it was a safer place. We helped them arrange a temporary stay here,” he said.
“Authorities here are cooperating and helping us out. It is a crucial time for many students with final examinations approaching and loss of studies at this time will impact their grades,” said one of the students, who was on his way to home.
Some students said that they were attacked by some unknown youth on Saturday night when he they were returning to the university hostel in Mullana in Ambala district.
Also, the Haryana police has registered an FIR after a video on social media showed some people asking Kashmiri students to vacate their accommodations in Mullana.
“Another video has surfaced in which two students were threatened to vacate their private accommodation,” a top official of Police in Mohali said.
As per the students, there were nearly 600 Kashmiri students in Ambala district, of which 350-400 were enrolled in a private university in Mullana.
“We reached out to the students and assured them about their security. We also spoke to their parents and assured them. Both the students (identified in the video) and their parents are satisfied with the steps we have taken,” the police official said.
The return of Kashmiri students to their home in Kashmir has punctured the tall claims of the state government to ensure safety of the Kashmiri students studying in various states.
“But we can’t put our lives at risk and continue to put up here. We want to go home and be with our families,” said a group of female students.
Meanwhile, the continuous attacks and harassment on Kashmiri students invited a reaction in Kashmir wherein the students from various coaching centres at Parraypora staged demonstration and demanded end to the attacks on students in outside states.
