Road, air connectivity takes a hit

Srinagar: The fresh Western Disturbance which is here to stay till Thursday evening has affected normal life in Jammu and Kashmir as Valley received a fresh snowfall while as rains lashed Jammu region. The snowfall has led to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway and also the air traffic here due to poor visibility.
Notably, the local MeT department had already issued a warning that a fresh WD is affecting JK from Feb 05 to Feb 07 evening. The MeT prediction had also said that there is possibility of snowfall and rainfall across the Valley during these three days.
Today, higher reaches of the Valley as well as plains received fresh snowfall, bringing the temperature further down across Kashmir. The rains also lashed Jammu division today, said an official.
Light to moderate snowfall was witnessed in some plains of Kashmir including the summer capital Srinagar, MeT officials said.
Road and air traffic between Kashmir and rest of the country was suspended on Wednesday due to heavy snowfall across the valley, officials added.
Of the 27 flights scheduled to arrive at the Srinagar Airport, 15 were cancelled due to poor visibility and heavy snowfall, an official of the Airport Authority of India said.
The traffic control department said the arterial Srinagar-Jammu road had to be closed for vehicular traffic following snowfall and rains, which triggered landslides at several places.
“No vehicles are being allowed on the highway due to landslides caused by rain and snowfall,” the official of the traffic department said.
He said a decision on resuming traffic will be taken only after debris of landslides is cleared and the weather improves.
Kashmir is witnessing a fresh spell of wet weather with higher reaches receiving heavy snowfall and plains lashed by a mix of rain and snow. (with PTI inputs)
