WUCMA celebrates World Wetlands Day

Sopore: Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) on Saturday celebrated the World Wetlands Day at Zurmanz village, situated on the lake shore of Asia’s largest lake (Wular Lake) in north Kashmir.
On this occasion, importance of Wular Lake was highlighted, which provides various ecological, hydrological and cultural services.
Wular Lake, which is one of the largest Lakes of Asia, plays an important role in flood mitigation of Kashmir valley.
However, due to some activities, its water holding capacity has significantly reduced. The main threats are siltation, willow plantation and pollution.
Coordinator Water Management WUCMA, Irfan Rasool who was present on the occasion launched an awareness-cum-anti-poaching campaign for protection of water birds in Wular Lake.
He said that this campaign will be carried out in every Wular notified village through road show, mobile van broadcast and children rallies to create peoples moment.
Eco development committees were also formed in the event in which volunteers registered themselves to work for the preservation and management of Wular Lake.
