Srinagar: A day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to State, authorities on Saturday beefed up security across Kashmir and seized hundreds of bikes across Srinagar.

Sources said almost every police station has seized bikes and a number of people told police seized them irrespective of any shortcoming in terms of documents.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who heads the Hurriyat Conference (M) was placed under house detention while Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani remains under house arrest.

A team of PM’s Special Protection Group (SPG) has taken over all the venues Modi is scheduled to visit, sources said.

Reports said frisking of commuters continued throughout the day. On Friday, government forces carried out search drills in city center Lal Chowk and drones fitted with cameras were also used.

A thick security cover has been thrown around the main venue Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the banks of the Dal Lake where Modi will address newly elected Sarpanchs and Panchs of Kashmir. He will also lay the foundation stone of multiple projects in the three regions of J&K.

PM Modi is scheduled to reach Leh directly from New Delhi and lay the foundation stone of Ladakh University, recently approved by the state administrative council headed by governor Satya Pal Malik. Besides, he will lay the foundation stone for extension of Airport in Leh, sources said.

He will also address a gathering at Leh during foundation stone laying ceremony of the first-ever university and extension of Leh Airport.

Thereafter, Modi is scheduled to reach Vijaypur in Samba district where he is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of multiple projects through e-mode and address a rally.

Later in the afternoon, PM will proceed to Srinagar and address Sarpanchs and Panchs at SKICC, Srinagar. (GNS)
