Highway remains shut as snow avalanche at Jawahar Tunnel yet to be cleared
Srinagar: Authorities have decided to keep the Srinagar-Jammu highway closed post snow avalanche that hit the Jawahar Tunnel yesterday and ‘keeping in view security of commuters’
Officials said that a huge avalanche hit the tunnel on the Qazigund side on Tuesday which is yet to be cleared.
They claimed, the avalanche could have caused a massive disaster had it hit the highway a few meters further north where all barracks of security forces and the tunnel’s maintenance staff are located.
“The clearance operation will commence as soon as the weather improves, ,” he said, adding till then no vehicular movement will be allowed over the only land connectivity of valley with the rest of world.
Snow avalanche and landslides also hit the highway at Digdol, Panthal and Khoni Nallah.
