‘Mock Drill’ scares people in Lal Chowk
Srinagar: A day after the grenade attack near Ganta Ghar here, the forces including police on Saturday conducted a mock-drill in the commercial hub Lal Chowk during the afternoon.
Amid mock-drill, the frisking was also intensified in the area as the vehicles especially the two-wheelers were being stopped and were being checked.
The police and paramilitary troopers had also erected temporary barricades on roads. The mock-drill was conducted by a joint team of Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), witnesses said.
Witnesses said that a large contingent of police and paramilitary troopers was seen at Lal Chowk in the afternoon where they conducted a mock-drill. They said that searches were also being conducted till the forces left the area.
They added that the forces also used drones in the area.
However, the presence of huge security forces in Lal Chowk created panic among the pedestrians and commuters including the traders.
Officials however, said that it was a routine exercise ahead of January 26. They said that the mock-drill in the commercial hub Lal Chowk was aimed to check “alertness” ahead of Republic Day.
However, the forces as per witnesses also conducted searches of the buildings in Lal Chowk.
