Principal says ‘rationalizing’ accommodation

Srinagar: SKIMS Bemina Medical College has issued a notice to the interns asking them to vacate the hostel immediately. However, the Principal SKIMS MC Bemina Dr Riyaz Untoo said that the administration was rationalizing the accommodation.

While the interns have been protesting against the order, they are saying that it will be difficult for them to look for the accommodation outside.

The Principal, on the other side, said they will ‘not’ be able to provide accommodation to all the interns, as there are residents and PGs as well, who are to be provided with the accommodation, “so we will be rationalizing the available resources,” he said.

“You see, in 2013 there was an intake capacity of 50 seats, now that has gone up to 100. Hostels are same, no additional hostel building came up in the campus,” he said.

As per the MCI guidelines, the hostel facility for the residents and the PG is a must, “keeping that in mind, we are trying to accommodate everyone, to keep up with the MCI guidelines,” he said.

When asked about what will be done with the interns, who are up in arms against the notice, Untoo said that the administration will try to accommodate them as well, “but it will be done on the basis of need,” he said.

“Suppose, someone is from far-flung area such as Rajouri, Kishtwar, Doda, Leh Kargil, after that we will take care of those who belong to the far-flung areas of Kashmir, we will prefer to provide those individuals with the accommodation,” he said, adding that “we are focusing on the rationalization and we will have to accommodate everyone in accordance to whatever resources are available with us,” he added.

“All the students who have recently passed their final year examination and are likely to join their internship programme in the college are directed to vacate the hostel immediately after the issuance of the notice, failing to which strict action shall be taken by the hostel/ college administration,” reads the SKIMS MC notice issued by the warden.

Meanwhile, Doctors’ Association of Kashmir (DAK)  while, terming the order as ‘dictatorial’ and ‘inhuman’ has said that by ordering the interns to vacate the hostels “that too in winters SKIMS, MCH administration has stooped all-time low as it’s totally impossible for students to arrange outside lodging,” DAK said in a statement.

“The time which they need to concentrate on studies shall be drastically affected if they are forced to vacate the hostels,” it added while asking higher-ups to intervene into the issue.
