Soldier killed, another injured in Tral attack

Srinagar: The killing spree fails to cease in Kashmir Valley as six militants were killed in two separate encounters in Baramulla and Anantnag districts on Thursday, police said.
Police claimed to have killed four militants in a gunfight at Kharpora area of Arwani in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
A police official said that a joint team of army and SOG launched a joint cordon-and-search operation in Kharpora area on a specific information about the presence of some militants there.
“The gunfight raged as soon as the government forces fired some warning shots towards the suspected house,” he said.
Four militants were killed in the gunfight so far, he said, adding that the operation was still going on.
One of the slain militants was identified as Sahil Makroo of Arwani.
He said the identity of other three slain militants is yet to be ascertained. “Three weapons have been recovered from the gunfight site,” he said.
Pertinently, the CASO and subsequently killing of the militants triggered clashes near the encounter site and its adjacent areas. The joint team of police and paramilitary troops used force to quell the protests.
However, when reports last came in, the operation amid clashes was going on
In an earlier encounter two militants were killed at Athoora area of Kreeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday morning.
Reports said that a joint team of army’s 52 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Athoora area on Thursday morning at around 6:00 a.m.
In the initial “brief” gunfight, both the militants were killed and their bodies recovered along with weapons, they said.
Soon after the news about the encounter spread, the youth took to streets and clashed with forces at Athoora and its adjoining areas, they said.
A police spokesman in a statement issued here said that the government forces launched a cordon and search operation based on “credible input” about the presence of the militants at Authoora village of Kreeri.
“As the search operation was going on, Police while making all efforts to motivate the hiding (militants) to surrender provided them with several opportunities to come out, however, the militants refused and instead fired from inside on the search party which was retaliated, leading to an encounter, “the spokesman said.
“In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed. The identity of the slain militants is being ascertained, “the spokesman said.
Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. Police have registered a case in this regard and investigation has been initiated, he said.
Meanwhile, the police repeated its advisory asking people not to venture near the encounter sites.
“Citizens are once again requested not to venture inside the site of encounter since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” the spokesman said.
