The blood spill in south Kashmir needs to stop and that too immediately. Every day we get to hear about killings in this part of Kashmir region and the way things have been moving forward it seems that no party- irrespective of the fact that which line of thinking they belong to- is willing to put an end to this mindless killing spree.

It is heartrending to learn about such incidents which have become a norm over the past few years now. The situation calls for immediate de-escalation from all sides. Both political and non-political groups needs to have a serious rethink about the strategy all the concerned are pursuing.

How long can the ground realities be ignored and living in denial mode about the bad situation in Kashmir be made a national policy. The union government and its representatives here have been resorting to jugglery of words and efforts are on to buy time and issue false statements.

This sort of unmindful strategy is not going to work as has been proved over the past three decades. Kashmir issue has been a reality since the days of partition and ignoring it for decades together has brought the situation to such a flash point that the results can prove to be disastrous for all the parties concerned.

The situation in Kashmir has been turning worse since the past three years. The iron hand policy has failed miserably and the political parties operating here have contributed in this failure. For mere political gains and securing their interests these parties have been lying to the people in Jammu and Kashmir and the policy makers in Delhi as well.

Presenting a false picture about the situation and the ground level developments have been serving nobody’s interests in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. While the rightwing BJP believes to use Kashmir as a trump card in the national elections scheduled for next year, the regional parties too are trying to extract as much possible from the situation so as to make themselves more and more relevant in the scheme of things here.

However, in all this mess the people of the state especially Kashmir valley are being held hostage and they are made to pay the price for mere political interests of these parties. At the end of the day it is the common man who bears the brunt of killings, death, destruction and loss of resources which will take us decades to compensate for.

How long can we go on ignoring the ground realities and living in denial about how bad things are in Kashmir. This question needs to be posed to all who claim to be the stake holders of Kashmir conundrum. While the mainstream parties cannot be absolved of the ills the state of Jammu and Kashmir is faced with, the separatist groups too cannot escape the responsibility.

A whole new generation is growing in conflict and what needs to be done is to start a time-bound and result-oriented dialogue process at various levels to set things right. Sticking to stated positions by all the concerned is not going to ease out the situation and taking political mileage out of the situation in Kashmir is either not going to help and those who feel like exploiting the situation are living in a fool’s paradise. So better to admit the reality and start towards achieving a solution.
