Srinagar: The counting for urban local body elections in Jammu and Kashmir has begun at SKICC.

“All the arrangements for counting of votes have been put in place at respective district headquarters. The counting of votes will begin at 9 am today,” an official of the election department said.

The fate of over 3,000 candidates will be decided by the end of the day.

The elections are a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress. A large number of independents are also in the fray. The National Conference and the PDP did not participate in the polls.

The urban local bodies polls in Jammu and Kashmir were held after a gap of 13 years, with the last elections being conducted in 2005.

Poll officials said that the counting started and all the results would be declared later in the day.

For the Srinagar municipal corporation, the counting is being held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar and for the Jammu municipal corporation it is being held at the Polytechnic Institute near Bikram Chowk.

For other districts of the state, counting is being held at the respective district headquarters.

The officials said that strict security arrangements have been made all across the state.

Though media persons were not allowed to venture inside SKICC here in Srinagar, however, after the intervention  by some top officials the media men were allowed to enter the premises where the counting is going on.
