Srinagar: Following the call given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on Friday staged a protest here at Maisuma area here against what they termed as ‘ongoing oppression’ in Kashmir.
According to a statement issued here, JKLF leaders and activists gathered at Madina chowk (Lal chowk) and staged a peaceful protest against ‘ongoing killing spree, arrests, vandalizing of villages and localities, beating and humiliating men, women and children by forces’.
The leaders said that the ‘ongoing oppression’ in entire valley is nothing but ‘state highhandedness.
“Killing innocents, damaging and destroying entire localities, beating and humiliating common people, arresting political activists and slapping them with PSA and other acts of suppression like these are glaring examples of colonial mindset,” JKLF spokesman quoted the protesting leaders as having said.
Condemning the prolonged incarceration of its chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik and others and ongoing house detention of veteran ailing leader Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq, JKLF leaders said that “despite this one sided violence by rulers, people of Kashmir boycotted the election drama with one voice.”
“Claims of being a democracy and caging down political leaders and activists and thus suppressing their voices can only be termed as hypocritical and travesty of democratic norms,” they said.
The JKLF leaders said that “spilling the blood of Kashmiris has been expedited by Indian forces so is the spree of arrests in entire valley.”
“Besieging villages and localities, beating inhabitants without the discrimination of gender and age, destroying their properties and kitchen appliances and electronic gadgets like Television sets, refrigerators, washing machines, coolers, computers and vehicles is nothing but targeting the civilian population for supporting the cause,” they said.
They said that destroying fruit orchards and crops of common people has become a new normal during present ruling regime. Leaders said that dozens of villages in Kulgam, villages like Trisal, Newa and other villages in Pulwama have in recent days witnessed this brutality during which all hell broke loose on common citizens at the hands of forces, SOG, police and army.
They said that thousands of young and old have been arrested and booked under PSA and this spree of arrests too has been expedited by present ruling regime.
“Recently an old and ailing leader Nisar Hussain Rather was arrested and slapped with PSA and shifted to Jammu which is a glaring example of ongoing suppression in Kashmir,” the statement said.
JKLF leaders said that “on one hand all this anti-people activities have been expedited and on the other hand rulers are trying to hoodwink international opinion by camouflaged statements and gestures.”
JKLF leaders said that “endeavoring killings, jails, torture, torment and other colonial aggressions is nothing new for Kashmiris and rulers , their forces and administration should bear in mind that their oppressive acts are bound to fail in suppressing the voices of Kashmiris who are striving for a just and sacred cause.”
