Father of three, Tariq was a former militant

Shopian: Unidentified gunmen on Thursday afternoon shot dead a Hurriyat activist in Memandar area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Sources said that the unidentified gunmen barged into the house of Tariq Ahmad Ganaie and abducted him from his residence.
Ganaie, who was also a Hurriyat activist was later shot at him by the unidentified gunmen about 200 meters away from his house, resulting in critical injuries to him.
They said that he succumbed to his injuries before reaching hospital.
As per locals, he was an active militant upto 1996 and later joined Masrat Alam’s Muslim league.
Soon after the incident, forces rushed to the spot and started search operation to nab the attackers.
Later, a group of militants appeared in his funeral prayers and fired several shots in air, eyewitnesses said.
A local told ‘Kashmir Vision’ that “the militants offered gun salute to offer a hint that we are not behind his killing.”
Pertinently as per locals, Tariq was slapped with PSA twice and last time he was slapped with PSA in 2016 uprising and was released from jail just before three months back.
Belonging to economically sound and an educated family, Tariq is survived by three children besides his wife.
Locals identified his three children as Usaim Tariq an engineering student at JNU Delhi, Sabeta Tariq pursuing a degree in Chemistry at Jamia Milia and Hubaish Tariq a 6th class student at Oasis boarding School Shopian.
