Srinagar: The heritage minarets of historic Jamia Masjid built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD in downtown Srinagar are being repaired, after almost 250 years, to restore them to their original glory.

A spokesperson of Anjuman-e-Auqaf (AeA) Jamia Masjid Srinagar said Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq chaired a meeting of the members of AeA to take the stock of ongoing repair and restoration work at Jamia masjid under the supervision of experts.

He said restoration work is in progress on the heritage minarets of Jamia Masjid after almost 250 years.

“Despite limited resources with the Anjuman this work has been undertaken by them with the help of experts to preserve the minarets and restore them to their original beauty. While repairing these minarets extreme care is being taken to maintain their originality,” he added.

The Jamia Masjid, an important mosque in Srinagar, was built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD. Later, the son of Sultan Sikandar, Zain-ul-Abidin got the mosque extended.

The attractions of the mosque include beautiful Indo-Saracenic architecture, a magnificent courtyard and 370 wooden pillars.

Thousands of Muslims assemble at the mosque every Friday to offer their prayers. However, since 2016 unrest, the authorities have closed the gates of the historic mosque on numerous times and prevented people from offering Friday prayers as a precautionary measure.

Mirwaiz, chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC), addresses congregation in the historic mosque on every Friday and other important occasions.
