Pulwama: One local militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter with government forces in Kangan area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, sources said. The slain militant has been identified as Mussawir Ahmed.

The gunfight had ensued after a cordon-and-search operation was launched by a joint team of army’s 55 RR, police and CRPF at Kangan orchards following inputs about the presence of some militants.

As the joint party approached the suspected spot, the militants hiding in the area opened fire triggering off an encounter.

One militant has been killed in the encounter while the gunfight is going on, sources said.

Meanwhile, massive clashes have erupted near encounter site, local sources said.

They said that soon after news of encounter spread in area youth in large number hit the streets to disrupt the anti-militancy operation.

The youth shouting pro-Islam, pro-freedom and pro-militancy slogans came out on the streets.

The protesters were trying to march towards the encounter site and started pelting stones, however the troops deployed in the area fired smoke shells to disperse them.
