Srinagar: Even as the state police chief claimed that the pro-freedom leaders will be allowed to move wherever they want, the pro-freedom leaders including Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were Wednesday held back and were not allowed to march towards Shopian.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for Shopian chalo today to exhibit solidarity with the bereaved families of Shopian. They were also scheduled to address gathering at Shopian.

However, Geelani as per reports tried to defy the restrictions in place outside his residence but the force personnel deployed there didn’t allow him to step out of his residence cum office at Hyderpora.

“Geelani was disallowed to march towards Shopian to express solidarity with the bereaved families of Shopian youth who were killed during encounters in South Kashmir’s Shopian district,” a Hurriyat (G) leader said.

He said that a posse of policemen deployed outside Geelani’s residence cum office at Hyderpora prevented him from moving out.

Earlier, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also tried to defy the restrictions put in place in view of the Shopian march but the police foiled his attempt and detained him.

Mirwaiz came out of his residence at Nigeen in Srinagar and tried to march towards Shopian.

However, a police party detained the Mirwaiz and lodged him at Nigeen police station.

Notably, the third leader of JRL, Muhammad Yasin Malik continued to remain under detention at Srinagar’s central jail.

Malik was detained from his Maisuma residence on Monday and was shifted to Srinagar’s central jail on a three day judicial remand.
