Kashmir shuts for third day to mourn killings
Srinagar: For the second consecutive day on Tuesday, the district administration Srinagar imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts while the rest of the Valley observed a complete shutdown on Joint Resistance Leadership’s (JRL) call.
The restrictions as per the officials were imposed in various Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven police station that include Rainawari, MR Gunj, Safa Kadal, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Kral Khud and Maisuma Police Stations.
However, they said that the areas falling under Kral Khud and Maisuma police stations were put under partial restrictions.
The officials said that the restrictions were put in place under section 144 CrPC to thwart any possible protests against the civilian killings in Shopian on Sunday during the encounters that led to the killing of thirteen militants and three Army troopers.
Witnesses said that the restrictions were also imposed in Kangan area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district to thwart any protest after a youth sustained injuries in police action on Monday.
Besides, a complete shutdown was observed across the Valley including Kishtwar district against the killings in Shopian.
The strike call in Kishtwar was issued by the Imam Jamia Masjid Kishtwar, Farooq Ahmed on Monday.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted in Kangan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district after reports that the injured youth Gowhar Ahmad Rather has succumbed to the injuries.
Reports said that youth defied restrictions and staged protests in the area. The protesters also pelted stones on the forces who later used tear gas canisters to disperse the agitating youth.
Meanwhile, trade body, Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) headed by Farooq Ahmad Dar also staged protest against the civilian killings in Shopian.
The protest was foiled by police in Srinagar after they tried to march towards United Nations office in Sonwar here. Witnesses said that scores of KEA protesters were also detained by the police.
Authorities continued to suspend the train services in view of the prevailing situation in the Valley.
However, the mobile internet services that were suspended on Sunday were restored in the Valley except the southern districts.
Locals from South Kashmir said that the mobile internet services continued to remain suspended in Southern districts on Tuesday.
