Srinagar: Police on Wednesday barred the Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani from moving towards Shopian.

Pertinently, Geelani was to march towards Shopian to express solidarity with the people and offer condolences to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones, a spokesman of the party had said.

As soon as Geelani tried to step out of his residence in Hyderpora, police already deployed there prevented him from coming out, witnesses said.

Notably, Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik have announced a march to Shopian town to express solidarity with the people of the district where 13 militants and 4 civilians were killed by forces on Sunday.

Earlier, Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained after he attempted to defy restrictions to march towards Shopian.

Meanwhile, restrictions continued in parts of Srinagar and some other places in the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday.

Reports said that a heavy deployment of government forces has been made in Srinagar and other ‘sensitive’ places in the Kashmir Valley to “maintain peace and law and order.

All educational institutions across Kashmir have been shut while as all examinations scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed.

The train services remained suspended for the fourth consecutive day.

Traffic on the otherwise busy Srinagar-Sonamarg road remained suspended for a second day on Wednesday.
