Traders, students and pol parties protest Shopian killings
Srinagar: To protest against the Shopian carnage, the Valley transporters, students and politicians took to streets on Monday, demanding from the government to take cognizance of the situation prevalent here and stop the killings forthwith.
At least 13 militants, four civilians and three Army troopers were killed in separate encounters that raged between forces and militants in South Kashmir’s Anantnag and Shopian districts.
Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF), the traders’ body of Kashmir staged a protest against the civilian killings in the southern district on Sunday.
Traders’ body headed by Muhammad Yasin Khan assembled at near Ganta Ghar (Clock Tower) in commercial hub Lal Chowk and held a sit-in there to protest against the ‘killing spree’ in Kashmir.
Scores of traders assembled near historic clock tower in Lal Chowk on Monday morning and held a demonstration against the killings of four civilians in Shopian yesterday.
Khan demanded from the government to take cognizance of the present prevailing situation in Kashmir and asked the dispensation to stop the killings.
Following the protest, the protesters later tried to march towards United Nations office here at Sonwar.
However, police deployed near Polo view didn’t allow them to march towards the UN office.
Witnesses said that scores of protesting traders were detained by the police.
Later in the afternoon, Awami Itehaad party (AIP) president and MLA Langate, Engineer Abdul Rasheed Sheikh along with his scores of supporters staged a protest against the Shopian carnages, demanding New Delhi to grant Right to Self Determination to the people of Kashmir.
The Langate legislator along with his supporters holding placards, assembled outside Srinagar’s Press Enclave and chanted slogans in favour of Right to Self Determination and against the killings in Kashmir.
They held a sit-in to protest against the killings that took place on Sunday.
The lawmaker told reporters that the people of Kashmir should be given Right to self determination as promised by the erstwhile leaders of India.
“Killings won’t resolve anything. A political resolution is a must to solve the long pending Kashmir issue,” he added.
Meanwhile, the students of Kashmir University also staged protest inside the premises of the varsity to oppose the varsity’s decision to hold the 13th J&K Science Congress (2018) function despite Shopian civilian killings on Sunday.
