Six decades on, Govt High school Verinag awaits up-gradation
Anantnag: Despite the passage of six decades, the government has utterly failed to upgrade the Government Boys High School Verinag to higher secondary level, painting a grim picture of the education sector in the state.
The Government Boys High School Verinag was established in the year 1951 but the successive regimes since then have failed miserably to upgrade the High School to the Higher Secondary level.
Importantly, this school, considered to be the oldest in Shahabad village in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district is awaiting up-gradation since 1951.
The educational institute according to the locals have produced noted KAS, IAS Officers, academicians, writers, doctors and engineers but the successive government seem reluctant to upgrade the school for the betterment of the students of the area.
The school as per the officials has 35 Kanals of land with infrastructure in it.
The residents of the area have been demanding the up-gradation of the school since the year 1990 but unfortunately no step was taken by the officials in this regard.
However, the locals said that ahead of the 2014 elections, the then Tourism Minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir laid the foundation stone for the up-gradation of the School but after the new dispensation took over in the state, the government failed to continue the work for up-gradation of the school.
Sources said that despite having all the facilities to upgrade the school, the government is playing dillydallying tactics to upgrade the educational institute for no reasons.
However, the students from the area said that the government must upgrade the school to higher secondary level so that the students could heave a sigh of relief.
Civil societies in the area have threatened to take to streets in case their demands won’t be met.
“We will take to streets against the government in case it fails to upgrade the school to higher secondary level,” they added.
