Police to seek ‘concessions, reservations’ for wards in private schools
Srinagar: The Jammu Kashmir Police has decided to approach reputed schools and seek ‘reservations and concessions’ for the kids of cops working with the state’s Police department.
The move comes days after the Police asked for 10 percent hike in the risk allowance of police cops working in the state.
Though the police department has constituted a high level committee in its headquarters regarding the issue, an official communique from Deputy Superintendent of Police Headquarters Anantnag has been shot to private schools regarding the issue.
“Police Headquarters J&K, Jammu has constituted a committee with the aim to approach reputed schools for providing reservation in the classes and concession in fee to the wards of Police personnel in lieu of which police shall offer to provide necessary practice and training to the children in such schools on important national and school level functions being celebrated during the year,” reads the letter.
It reads that in order to discuss the matter with the management and Principals of these schools a meeting has been scheduled at DIG Office Anantnag on March 27.
Also, the police have already extended invitations to the management and the Principals of these reputed schools to discuss the subject.
Meanwhile, the private schools association has opposed the move saying it was direct control on autonomy of private schools.
“Such moves are aimed at controlling private schools indirectly. But we won’t allow it at any cost,” said President Private School Association (PSAK), G N Var.
He said the Police department has its own schools where they can educate wards of police personnel and need not to seek any reservation in private schools.
“Private schools can’t discriminate between wards of civil and police personnel,” he said.
He said their association has sympathies with deserving students but financing should be the responsibility of the government having huge resources.
“Police is paid for the services but what about the deserving and poor civilians who are not given any reservation or concession in any schools,” he said.
Meanwhile, police is caught in a row over its decision to seek reservation of their wards in Private schools in Kashmir.
Though a letter has been sent to principals of private schools of Kashmir valley and President Kashmir private schools association G N Var for their participation in a meeting with the members of a committee constituted by police department for the purposes but majority of the school principals are unlikely to attend the meeting.
When contacted Director General Police Dr S P Vaid said “We have asked for preference to wards of police personnel and not reservations”. Asked why police does not seek reservations for wards of police personnel in Government schools, DGP Vaid said that “children of police personnel also take admissions in government schools”.
However G N Var, President PSAK said that he is not going to attend the meeting for this purpose in the office of DIG South Kashmir tomorrow on 27th March.
“Some principals may attend the meeting for the reasons of fear and harassment but majority of principals invited will skip the meeting. This is unwarranted intervention of police in working of schools and this won’t be tolerated’.
