Srinagar: Barring south Kashmir districts, educational institutions opened after three month long winter break in Kashmir valley on Saturday, officials said. In south Kashmir, the schools will open on Monday, March 12.

Reports said that the schools up to higher secondary level resumed their class work with students thronging back to schools.

At most of the places across Kashmir, children were seen dressed in their school uniforms waiting for their school buses at bus stops.

From certain places especially summer capital Srinagar, there were reports of traffic jams with added rush of school buses on the roads.

“We are happy to meet our friends in schools after a long time. We had planned to meet our friends a week ago but opening of schools was delayed by a week due to shutdown and restrictions,” said Anjum, a primary class student from Srinagar.

The students were seen heading to their school with excitement of meeting their friends and other classmates.

“Staying homes for a long period is always boring. We are pleased and overwhelmed to meet our friends in schools. On first day in school, we will share our winter stories and have fun with our school mates,” said Aayiz, a class 7th student from Srinagar.

The authorities delayed opening of schools against schedule on March 5 after simmering tensions in Kashmir against the killing of four civilians in army firing in Pahnoo area of Shopian.

The class work was suspended for a week in all educational institutions and recently the state government announced that it is going to come up with an academic calendar through which the academic days lost to shutdowns would be compensated by working days on upcoming holidays.

Earlier, the education department had deputed all the teachers to their respective schools in order to make arrangements for the reopening of schools. The teachers were asked to observe a cleanliness week in schools and welcome the students on first day in the institutions.
