Srinagar: PG Orthodontics students of Government Dental College (GDC) Srinagar Tuesday alleged harassment by their Head of the Department (HoD). The medico students said that the senior faculty member is making them do variety of domestic chores—apart from torturing them mentally and physically.

Six PG students who are under the supervision of the HoD Orthodontics have been meted with the treatment which is not expected from a senior doctor and these young medicos are demanding immediate action against him.

These students have been running from pillar to post in want of justice, however, so far all they have been given is a cold shoulder from everybody.

“This has been happening for months now, and when it all went out of control we decided to ask for help from authorities, but nobody seems to be listening to us,” said one among these six doctors at GDC Srinagar.

While narrating the ordeal of harassment, he said “from picking and dropping his relatives and family members from airport, to washing his car, we have been doing everything- rather he has made us do everything anyone can think of.”

The ‘madness’ doesn’t even stop there—he, as per students, has even physically assaulted and abused them several times, thus torturing them mentally as well as physically.

The students even alleged that he makes them come to his private clinic at Karan Nagar after 4 in the evening and makes them work at his clinic.

“Given the fact that he is the HoD of a department, even after this, he is doing private practice easily and top of it he makes us do things related to his private practice, by forcing us to come there,” the students alleged.

“Apart from torturing us mentally and physically, his madness is making the patient care to suffer, because at times while we are busy doing his chores, we fail to attend to the patients who are in need,” they added

These six doctors have lodged a complaint in CM’s Grievance Cell. Even they have brought this matter into the notice of District Administration, but so far all seems to be in vain.

When they brought this matter into the notice of Principal GDC, he ordered an inquiry into the matter; however, so far even after months, nothing concrete has come out of it.

“He ordered the enquiry just to buy time and nothing was done after that, they are just trying to play around,” the students said.

On Tuesday, Dr Pawan Kotwal IAS, Principal Secretary to the government health and medical education department visited GDC Srinagar, who later agreed to meet the protesting students who were holding placards, demanding justice just inside GDC campus.

However, what transpired during the meeting of Dr Kotwal with the students was only to shock them.

While giving details about the meeting, the students said that he only gave them a cold shoulder and he in a way tried to justify what their HoD was doing.

“He said that such things happen and tried to sermonize about teacher-student relation,” the students said, adding “what the HoD was doing to us cannot be justified anyway.”

The meeting was attended by Principal GMC, Principal GDC along with other senior doctors. Principal GDC, Prof Reyaz Faooq did not respond to the repeated calls from this reporter in order to get his comments on the issue.

Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK), while taking notice of the alleged ‘harassment’ has said that it will be meeting the concerned HoD and will try to resolve the issue.

“We are aware of the issue and want that matter should be solved at the earliest as their exams are near, now in this regard DAK will be meeting the concerned HoD in order to try to understand the issue, and will try to resolve the issue amicably,” Dr Masood ul Hassan, Media and Publicity Secretary, DAK  said.
