Shopian firing: Yasin Malik detained
Srinagar: Police on Monday detained Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik after he tried to stage a protest against the alleged killing of civilians in Shopian firing.
Malik, along with his supporters, reached Budshah bridge here and tried to march towards Lal Chowk, officials said.
They were stopped and taken into preventive custody, the officials added.
Before the police could arrest him, Malik while talking to reporters said that the present government is directly responsible for the mayhem in Shopian.
He said that the people should introspect before getting involved in any activity like elections as the mainstream political parties provide a cover up to all such situations where worst form of human rights abuses are witnessed.
Malik along with two other front leaders were later shifted to Central Jail Srinagar from Kothi Bagh police station, where they were lodged earlier.
Besides Yasin Malik, Bashir Ahmad Kashmiri and Ghulam Mohammad Dar were also shifted to the jail, a spokesperson of the party said.
Make details about Shopian incident public, Omar tells CM
Srinagar: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that the state government should make public the details of the incident and also the circumstances leading up to it.
“The Chief Minister has termed the deceased as civilians and it is hence incumbent upon her to take stringent, legal action based on the information she has as the Home Minister of the State. As the Head of the Unified Command, her word has to be the final word and has to be followed by visible, concrete action,” Omar said in the statement issued here.
Omar expressed grief over the continued bloodbath in Kashmir and said the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Valley was a matter of grave concern and called for serious introspection.
“The Shopian incident is yet another stark reminder of the grave and rapidly deteriorating situation in the Valley and varying accounts from the Chief Minister and the Security Forces on the incident are unfortunate and further perpetuate the sense of disenchantment, distrust and alienation”, the former CM said.
