Fresh Western Disturbance to affect JK from today: MeT

Srinagar: The weatherman on Wednesday predicted moderate rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, saying that a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is affecting the state and its adjoining areas.

Director Meteorological Department said that a fresh western disturbance is affecting J& K and adjoining areas and most likely to affect the state from March 01to March 03 afternoon.

The Director further said that under the influence of a fresh WD, there is possibility of moderate rain or snowfall at widespread places of Jammu, Kashmir and moderate snowfall in Ladakh, mainly in Kargil district.

He further stated that the higher reaches of Kashmir and Jammu would likely receive moderate to heavy rain or snowfall.

“Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama and Budgam districts will most likely receive heavy rain or snowfall,” Dir MeT added.

He further said that the expected rain or snowfall would lead to disruption of surface transportation mainly on the National Highway.

The Meteorological department further informed that the maximum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of the state was recorded 17.2 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.9 degree Celsius.

The department further said that the day temperature at Kargil was recorded 6.1 degree Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded minus 7.1 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, Minister for Disaster Management Relief Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Javaid Mustafa Mir has directed the Divisional and District Disaster Management Authorities to be in a state of preparedness in view of the inclement weather forecast issued by Meteorological Department for next three days.

The Minister instructed IGP Traffic to ensure that all precautionary measures are taken well in advance for smooth traffic movement and clearance of stranded vehicles as the inclement weather may lead to the temporary closure of the National Highway.
