Anantnag: As the encroachment continues on River Jehlum in Verinag, a famous Stone Bridge constructed during the Mughal period known as ‘Kani Kadal Verinag’ suffered damage while the authorities are acting as mute spectators and are not bothering to take action in this regard.

Irfan Ahmad, one among the locals said that they approached Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tourism Development Authority Verinag to save the heritage bridge but unfortunately besides mere assurances, nothing has been done in this regard.

Talking to ‘Kashmir Vision’, another local, Zakir Hussain said that the ‘mafia’ is using heavy machinery like JCB to destroy this heritage bridge.

“The bridge, a route to cross the river is being damaged slowly by the locals but the department has failed to take any concert step regarding the matter,” he said.

Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Dooru Shahabad, Umar Shafi said that he wasn’t aware about the issue.

“Strict action will be taken against the culprits involved into the vandalization of the heritage bridge. Any official found guilty will also be punished according to the law,” he said.
