Kupwara: Inhabitants of Tarthpora Tehsil in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district are up in arms against the Power Development Department (PDD), for pushing them to reel under darkness from past few months.

The residents of almost 30 villages including Kalmoona, Patchkoot, Tarathpora, Daril and others said that they are facing ‘unprecedented’ power cuts, causing tremendous hardships to the people especially students.

The residents accused the PDD of not adhering to the curtailment schedule.

“We are not getting even 3-4 hours electricity in 24 hours. It is pathetic. The present government has failed to provide the basic facilities to the people. Our children are suffering,” aggrieved students said.

“The erratic power supply is more annoying than having no electricity at all,” Javid Ahmad, a resident of Kalmoona village said.

They alleged PDD of ignoring their sufferings. “As soon as the winter approaches, the electricity starts playing hide and seek here,” Ali Mohd, a shopkeeper said.

Thousands of the students of the Tehsil who are studying and preparing for KAS mains and JKSSB posts also expressed resentment against the PDD department.

Taking to this reporter, the aspirants said, “We are the worst sufferers. Our exams are approaching but we are not able to study. How can we compete with other districts.”

They further said “the administration should take immediate notice of the issue instead of forcing us to take streets.”

Meanwhile, the members of the Tarthpora Tehsil committee have appealed the authorities to look into the matter and warned them of ‘repercussions’ if the issue is not solved soon.

“The government is testing our patience. They are forcing us to come on roads and stage protests,” they said.

JE PDD Ramhall Division said, “The claims are baseless. We are trying our best provide the electricity according to the schedule.”
