25 families flee amid intense cross-border shelling in Uri sector
Srinagar: Twenty-five families comprising hundred people on Thursday fled away in Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district following intense cross-border shelling in the area.
An official said the Pakistan troopers targeted army posts at Hatlanga, Churanda and Tika Post along the Line of Control. “The Pakistan army started firing at around 8:00 am which was responded strongly by the soldiers manning the fence.
The firefight continued till late in the evening, the official said, adding that several houses reportedly suffered damage during the shelling.
The intensity of the cross-border shelling was such that the villagers living near the borders were shifted to safety by the concerned police station.
The official, however, said that there was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing. “The situation is tense in the area,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Nissar Ahmad Naqash said that around 25 families living in Silikote and Balakote comprising 100 people left homes on their own due to fear.
“The families fled on their own and 70 people among them were given shelter and food at Higher Secondary school while as rest (30 people) have gone with their relatives,” DC said.
