Srinagar: One intruder was killed and three Indian Army soldiers were injured when an attempt by Pakistani Army’s Border Action Team (BAT) to attack an Indian Army picket along the Line of Control (LoC) was foiled on Sunday night, defence sources said.

According to the defence sources, the incident occurred around 5.25 pm on Sunday when a team of 15 Maratha Light Infantry stationed at Sarla Top in Poonch sector noticed suspicious movement 100 metres from the post in the Indian territory.

“The post is located ahead of the electrified security fencing running along the LoC and is less than 200 metres from the LoC,” they added.

The body of the heavily armed intruder was recovered on Monday morning from Khari Karmara area in Poonch, defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said.

“The alert troops noticed some movement and immediately engaged the group with effective fire. There was immediate retaliation from the armed intruders. The supporting and covering fire from Pak Army posts with a view to cover the move and help in the extrication of the armed intruders continued unabated,” he said.

Three injured soldiers who were wounded in the attack were airlifted to a hospital in Udhampur for treatment where their condition is stated to be stable, sources added.

The Army has recovered the large haul of arms and ammunition including three live RPG Grenades, four disposable RL, Molotov cocktail, hand grenades, AK Magazine, one mobile phone and R/T Set, Medical kit, Backpack, and a Pakistan flag.

The intruders reportedly fired a round from the RPG at the post leading to minor injuries to three soldiers.

Earlier, in June last year BAT allegedly killed two Indian army soldiers in an attack 600 metres inside the Indian Territory in the same sector.

According to the data provided by the state government, twenty people — 11 security personnel and nine civilians — have been killed and over 75 wounded in shelling along the LoC and the International Border (IB) in Jammu division since the beginning of this year.

Meanwhile, a junior commissioned officer (JCO) was injured in an accidental mine blast in a forward area in Mankote sub sector in the district yesterday.

The officer accidentally stepped over a landmine, which was washed away, causing an explosion, the official said requesting anonymity. (with PTI inputs)
