Anantnag: The vital Achabal-Chatabal road in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, connecting the visitors to the Valley’s prominent tourist destination, Achabal has been neglected by the authorities as it has developed potholes art various places, leaving the commuters especially the tourists to suffer.

The deteriorating conditions of the road has put question mark on the tall claims of the authorities regarding the promotion the tourism at various levels with locals saying that the road, which is in shambles is expressing the ‘negligent’ attitude of the administration.

The macadamization of the Achabal-Chatabal road was started under PMGSY in the year 2008 and was completed in the year 2014.

However, the black top didn’t sustain for even three years as the road at various places has developed potholes.

Locals held PMGSY officials accountable for the potholed road, saying that they never visited the area to check the condition of road since then.

They informed ‘Kashmir Vision’ that they approached the concerned officials in this regard but unfortunately no step was taken to restore the road.

The locals alleged that the road has not been constructed as per the DPR, which according to them is the reason for the dilapidated condition of the road.

Despite spending 22 crores on the road, about 22 kms from Achabal to Chatabal, the locals said that road is exposing the commuters to hardships while traveling. “We are facing lot of problems due to this dilapidated condition of road,” they said.

The locals demanded the intervention of administration in this regard and urged them to take necessary steps at an earliest.

Executive Engineer PMGSY of District Anantnag, Khalid Hussian blamed contractor for failing to maintain the condition of road, saying that “it was the duty of contractor to maintain this road for about 5 years and he has to repair the road at any cost.”

He said that he will direct the contractor to repair the road and assured that the road will be repaired soon.
