Cold conditions continue in Kashmir

Srinagar: Cold conditions continued in Kashmir as the mercury dropped at most places in the Valley and the Ladakh region, with all stations recording sub-zero minimum temperature.

Kargil was the coldest place in the state as the minimum there settled at a low of minus 16 degrees Celsius, down from yesterday’s minus 15.5 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said here.

The night temperature in nearby Leh town rose nearly four degrees from a low of minus 12.4 degrees Celsius yesterday to settle at a low of minus 8.7 degrees Celsius last night, he said.

Srinagar – the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir — recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, marginally up from the previous night’s minus 3.9 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Qazigund – the gateway town to the Valley — in south Kashmir registered a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 4 degrees Celsius on the previous night, the official said.

He said that the night temperature in Kokernag, in south Kashmir, settled at a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius.

Kupwara recorded its minimum at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, a decrease of over two degrees from the previous night’s minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Pahalgam — the south Kashmir health resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra — recorded a low of minus 6.1 degrees Celsius last night, compared to the previous night’s minus 5.8 degrees Celsius, he said.

The official said that the mercury at the famous ski resort of Gulmarg, in north Kashmir, recorded minus 7.5 degrees Celsius, an increase from the previous night’s minus 9 degrees Celsius.

The MeT office has forecast mainly dry weather in the state till 9 February, after which, it said there was a possibility of a wet spell for a few days.  (PTI)
