3 soldiers killed after snow avalanche hits army post in Machil sector

Srinagar: Three soldiers were killed and another suffered injuries after an army post came under an avalanche in Machil sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday afternoon.

A senior army officer told a Srinagar-based news gathering agency that an army post of 21 Rajput came under an avalanche today at around 4:30 pm at Sona Pandi Gali (SPG) in Machil along the line of control.

He said that after the avalanche struck the army post four soldiers went missing. A search operation was started immediately and all the four soldiers trapped under snow were retrieved.

However, one soldier died on the spot and two others succumbed while they were being referred to 92 base hospital Badamibagh, Srinagar. The fourth identified as Sepoy Bipin is said to be stable and has been hospitalized, the officer said.

The officer identified the deceased as Havaldar Kamlesh Kumar, Niak Balbeer and Sepoy Rajinder.
