KUPWARA: Normal life was hit in Handwara town of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday due to a complete shutdown against the massacre of 22 civilians allegedly by Border Security Forces on this day in 1990.

22 people were killed and scores were injured near Handwara Police Station during a protest march against the Gawkadal massacre on January 21, 1990.

Shops and business establishments remained closed in Handwara town and other areas in Kupwara on a call given by a Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).

Traffic was also off the roads and work in government offices and banks was also affected, reports said. Though educational institutions remained closed due to winter vacation, tuition and coaching centres also remained closed due to the strike.

The relatives of the slain men have demanded that a memorial be built at the main chowk for the victims of the massacre. They have also demanded that a murder case be registered against the guilty security men.

Meanwhile, people in large numbers hailing from different areas and all walks of life attended a function to commemorate those who were killed in Handwara. Rich tributes were paid to the slain civilians and special prayers were held on the occasion.
