Militant killed in gunfight at Kokernag

Srinagar: One militant and a civilian were killed during an encounter that began in Anantnag district’s Kokernag area on Tuesday morning.

The two sides began exchanging fire in the forest area of Larnoo, according to police sources.

One local militant has been killed in the gunfight with government forces in Pehlipora Larnoo Kokernag area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag, sources said.

Police identified the deceased militant as Mohammad Farhan Wani son of Ghulam Mohammad Wani resident of Wangund Khudwani. Farhan was reportedly active since 13 Jun 2017.

“One killed at the encounter identified as Farheen Wani of Hizbul outfit. Search continues,” Jammu and Kashmir Police wrote on Twitter.

One AK 47 rifle and other ammunition have been recovered while forces continued with search operations in the area, reports said.

Later a police spokesman said that police along with 19RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Pehlipora village of Larnoo Kokernag. During the searches, a militant hiding in the area fired upon the joint search team. The fire was retaliated, ensuing an encounter.

“One militant was killed in the encounter who was identified as Farhan Ahmad Wani Son of Ghulam Mohammad Wani resident of Redwani Khudwani, Kulgam. 01 INSAS rifle, 02 INSAS magazines and 42 rounds were recovered from the encounter site, the spokesman added.

He said the militant was a hardcore stone pelter and a case FIR number 45/17 of Kulgam under section 147, 148, 149, 336, 332, 307 RPC was registered. He was also involved in many anti national/social and unlawful activities. Cases under section 10, 11, 13 ULAP Act has already been registered against him in Police Station Kulgam.

Meanwhile, heavy clashes between government forces and civilians erupted near the encounter site in Larnoo and were going on when this report was filed.

The protests also erupted in the Kulgam district area soon after the news about the killing of a local militant in Kokernag gunfight spread around.

Police spokesman in a statement issued here said that two civilians sustained bullet injuries when they pelted stones on the Army camp located at Kudwani.

“Reportedly some unidentified militants from the mob also fired some shots towards the army camp,” he said, adding that in the said incident one civilian identified as Khalid Ahmed Dar (22) who received a bullet injury on his neck succumbed at DH Anantnag.

“The other one namely Yasir Ahmed Dar (30) of Khudwani with shoulder injury is stated to be stable. In this connection case FIR no 5/2018 has been registered at P/S Kulgam and investigation has been set into motion,” police spokesman said.

Sources at the hospital in Anantnag said that they received 3 injured persons in the hospital. Two of them had bullet injuries and one pellet injuries.

Meanwhile, mobile internet services have been suspended in Anantnag and Kulgam districts following the encounter.

“We have received orders to shut internet including 2G, 3G and 4G as a preventive measure,” a telecom Official told ‘Kashmir Vision’.

Earlier on Monday, a militant was killed in Chadoora area of central Kashmir on Monday during the encounter between government forces and militants. The slain militant was identified as Musavir Wani of Pulwama.
