Kupwara avalanches: One more body recovered, death toll reaches 9

Srinagar: One more body has been recovered under snow on Saturday taking the death toll to nine after three vehicles came under multiple snow avalanches at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Friday evening.

Deputy Commissioner Khalid Jehangir said that one more body has recovered from the avalanche site near Sadhana Top.

“With the recovery of one more body today afternoon, the death toll mounted to nine including the beacon official Havaldar MP Singh,” DC said, adding that three persons were already rescued and have been hospitalised.

He said reports of one more person is said be missing in the area and efforts are on to trace him out.

Earlier, DC has said that soon after the unfortunate incident, the whole men and machinery was put into motion to rescue the missing persons.

He said police, army, SDRF and local volunteers are taking part in the rescue operation which is still under way.

DC appreciated the role of local volunteers saying being locals, they know the terrain of the area and worked hard with the joint rescue team.

“Without the local volunteers, it was quite impossible to recover the bodies in the record time keeping in view the tough terrain and bad weather,” he said.(GNS)
