Srinagar: With the recovery of four more bodies trapped under snow on Saturday, the death toll mounted to eight after three vehicles came under multiple snow avalanches at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Friday evening.

Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Khalid Jehangir said that soon after the unfortunate incident, the whole men and machinery was put into motion to rescue the missing persons.

“Four more bodies have been recovered today afternoon, taking the death toll to seven including the beacon official Havaldar MP Singh,” DC said, adding that three persons were rescued and have been hospitalised.

He said two more persons are reportedly said to be missing under the snow.

He said police, army, SDRF and local volunteers are taking part in the rescue operation which is still under way.

DC appreciated the role of local volunteers saying being locals, they know the terrain of the area and worked hard with the joint rescue team.

“Without the local volunteers, it was quite impossible to recover the bodies in the record time keeping in view the tough terrain and bad weather,” he said.

Meanwhile, an army officer said they have already deputed special rescue teams to the site to assist the administration in recovering the bodies of the missing in the avalanche. (GNS)
