Shopian: The fresh snowfall on the higher reaches of the south Kashmir belt including Shopian area in the Pir Panjal range has hampered the snow clearance work on Mughal road leaving it closed for vehicular traffic for the 16th day today, officials said.

Mughal road, which links the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with south Kashmir’s Shopian district, was closed for traffic on December 10 evening after a heavy snowfall.

A senior official of the district administration said that due to fresh snowfall and slippery condition of the hilly track, no snow clearance work could be carried out on various stretches of the road.

He said that in case weather improves and the movement of men and machinery is possible, then only the clearance work will be initiated.

Meanwhile, cold wave conditions continued in Kashmir as the night temperature stayed several degrees below the freezing point.

Even the day temperature did not see any major change forcing the people in higher ranges to stay indoors, reports said.
