Srinagar: Police on Saturday foiled the protest march of Jammu and Kashmir Youth Civil Society (JKYCS) and detained scores of its members after they tried to march towards the commercial hub Lal Chowk to protest against the hardships being faced by Tihar jail inmates.
Witnesses said that members from the JKYCS wearing black badges assembled at Srinagar’s press enclave.
The protesters were holding banners displaying the images of prisoners including Muhammad Qasim Faktoo, Dukhtaran-e-Millat Chief, Syeda Aasiya Andrabi and others. They were also carrying placards reading ‘UN should intervene, Respect Human Rights, Respect prisoners Rights’.
The protesters were demanding their immediate release.
The protesting JKYCS members said that Kashmiri prisoners are suffering hardships in Tihar jail. “The prisoners are being threatened and are being tortured in outside jails especially in Tihar jail by jail authorities,” they said.
They said that it is unfortunate that the United Nations is acting as mute spectator and taking no action over the ‘atrocities’ being committed on the Tihar jail inmates.
“We appeal human-rights commission to intervene into the matter and play their role in releasing the prisoners at the earliest,” they said.
Meanwhile, as soon as the protesters tried to march towards the Lal Chowk from Press Enclave, the police intercepted them and detained many of its members.
The protesters were detained by the police officials present in the press enclave and were lodged at Kothi Bagh Police Station.
