Silk factory and filature unit coming up in Jammu
Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Industries Limited (JKI) has got nod for setting up of a silk factory and filature unit in Jammu and re-commissioning of filature and spinning plants in Srinagar, an official spokesman said today.
The approval for implementation of several projects, including establishment of the silk factory and new filature unit in Jammu and re-commissioning of Kashmir filature and spinning plants at Solina in Srinagar, was given at the 154th meeting of board of directors of JKI here, the spokesman said.
The meeting, chaired by state Minister for Industries and Commerce Chander Parkash Ganga yesterday, also cleared modernisation of joinery mills at Bari Brahmana Jammu on the same lines as the government units of Pampore in South Kashmir.
“These projects will involve an investment of Rs 43.20 crore,” the spokesman said.
The board also undertook a comprehensive review of the overall working of the corporation and sought details of the projects taken up and the achievements so far in turning the entity into a self-reliant commercial unit.
The meeting reviewed the progress in implementation of modernisation of silk factory in Rajbagh and woollen mills of Bemina in Srinagar at an estimated cost of Rs 35 crore under World Bank funding.
With implementation of the projects, Ganga said, the silk and wool industry within the state would tremendously benefit.
Elaborating, he said the endeavour is towards complete value addition to the locally available raw material, particularly cocoon, which will benefit cocoon rearers.
These initiatives, apart from creating job opportunities, are expected to set in motion a viable economical cycle benefiting various stakeholders, the minister added.
He also called for imparting necessary skill development training for execution of these projects.
To ensure better marketing of products, the minister directed setting up of showrooms at new Jammu airport, Katra — the base camp for pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi shrine — and Banihal railway stations, other than the places that have extensive footfall of pilgrims.
He also stressed on using e-commerce platform for sale of products. PTI
