‘Chilla Kalan’ to begin on a dry note in Kashmir
Srinagar: As ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day harshest winter period is all set to begin from Thursday, the dry spell will continue to persist in Kashmir in the next coming days with weatherman predicting further dip in the mercury.
“The mercury in the Valley will further dip in the next upcoming days,” Sonum Lotus, Director Meteorological (MeT) department told ‘Kashmir Vision’.
He said that during this month, the mercury will go down to minus 5. “There is possibility that the temperature in the plains would go down to minus 5 or 6 degrees this month,” he said.
Lotus further added that there is no prediction of snow or rains in the next upcoming days. “No rains or snow would occur in next one week,” he informed.
Notably, Kargil in Ladakh region froze at minus 14.5 degrees, recording the lowest minimum temperature this season.
The weatherman said that the Leh would likely witness a further dip in the temperature as well. “The mercury would go down to minus 20 above,” Lotus said.
Pertinent, the mercury has been on a downward spiral for the past one week in the town.
The official in the MeT department said that the state’s summer capital, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius down from the previous night’s minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
The famous ski-resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius last night compared to the previous night’s minus 6.0 degrees Celsius.
The mercury at Pahalgam, the famous health resort dipped nearly two degrees from minus 5.3 degrees Celsius the previous night to register the minimum temperature of minus 7.0 degrees Celsius.
