Srinagar: Two days after a teacher was beaten in the office of the Sub District Magistrate (SDM) Kokernag, the district administration has ordered an enquiry into the incident. The inquiry officer has been directed to submit the report within a period of 10 days.

Notably, the probe was order following a day long protest of united teachers’ forum outside the office of deputy commissioner Anantnag on Saturday.

As per an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, Assistant Commissioner Revenue (ACR) Syed Shabir Ahmad has been appointed as enquiry officer to enquire into the matter which led to an ‘ugly turn’ of events in the SDM office Kokernag on Thursday.

“The enquiry officer will complete the enquiry and shall submit the report to deputy commissioner Anantnag within a period of 10 days for initiating further action in the matter,” reads the order issued by DC Anantnag.

Meanwhile, the Education Minister, Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari condemned the beating of teacher and stated that the issue will be taken up with chief secretary.

“It is really condemnable. The SDM should have not humiliated and insulted the teacher. Insult to any employee is unacceptable,” the education minister said.

Earlier, teachers staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Anantnag to protest against the reported thrashing of a teacher by the SDM Kokernag.

The protesters alleged that the teacher was manhandled, abused by the SDM and his subordinates over an issue in delivering his duties as BLO.

“The teacher (Abdul Qayoom) was beaten by SDM and his subordinate officials after he asked his colleague (who is deputed as BLO) to attend winter camp classes in government schools. Qayoom called the teacher on the directions of ZEO but was beaten,” the teachers said.

They also threatened to boycott the winter tutorial programme of the government if it failed to take action against the SDM.

“A teacher can’t do two jobs at one time. All the teachers should be relieved from all non-teaching assignments,” they said.

Reports said that the said teacher was called by the SDM and asked to attend the winter tutorials besides performing the duties of BLO. The reports added that the teacher requested the official to relieve him from BLO posting which irked the official and he responded with ‘abuses and thrashing’.

Earlier on December 4, SDM Zainpora in Pulwama reportedly abused a senior surgeon for not wearing an apron during the duty hours. The video of the SDM scolding the doctor had gone viral on social media, following which the Doctors’ Association of Kashmir has sought a strong disciplinary action against the SDM for publicly humiliating the surgeon.
