Srinagar: Clashes erupted in Batpora village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday after the killing of a driver in army firing.

Asif Iqbal, a driver by profession, was injured in firing by army personnel during an ambush at Thandipora area of Kupwara last night, a police official said, according to PTI news agency.

He said the forces had laid an ambush in the area following intelligence inputs about the movement of militants.

Iqbal was rushed to a hospital at Kralpora where from he was referred to a hospital here, but he succumbed on the way, the official said.

Reports said that hundreds of people stopped the ambulance carrying the body of the deceased at Batpora, a village adjoining Thandipora, and staged massive protesters.

The forces, they said, responded by lobbing tear smoke shells.(PTI)
