Srinagar: The lack of infrastructure in government schools has played spoilsport for school education department to go ahead with its ‘free winter tutorial programme’ for students in government schools across Kashmir.

Today’s fresh spell of snow left the students in a tizzy who were seen shivering in their classrooms during the classes in a government school.

“Government has assured to put in place all heating arrangement for students during winter tutorials but heating arrangement won’t serve any purpose in the schools which are without seating arrangement,” an official said.

The official said the government has decided to charge onetime payment of Rs 300 as heating charges from students during winter tuition. “Most of the schools selected for winter tutorials don’t have proper windows and doors and students are made to sit on floor,” the official said.

The students who have opted for winter tutorials also stated that they were facing inconveniences to attend classes in schools which are in shabby conditions.

“Some schools have proper heating arrangements for students and have proper windows and doors as well. But some schools are not in a good condition,” they said.

The school education department has selected 10 schools in each zone to start classes for winter tutorials but the lack of infrastructure has spoiled the initiative.

It may be recalled that the education minister recently stated that around 70 percent schools are without electricity facility and sanitation, while as 60 percent are without drinking water facility.

“If we go by the ground situation, most of the schools didn’t deserve to be selected for this programme,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the students said the school students said the department should regularly monitor the functioning of winter tutorials as teachers don’t take their classes seriously.

“Last year, we experienced that most of the teachers took first few classes seriously and later took it casually leaving students at crossroads. Same should not be repeated this year,” the students said.

Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) GN Itoo said they have instructed the Principals and headmasters of the schools to start the winter tutorial in schools which are in good conditions.

“We have instructed them that the initiative should not turn out to be an eye wash but should benefit the students also,” Itoo said. He said in case any school was found in bad conditions it will be replaced immediately.
