Weatherman predicts wet weather for next five days
Srinagar: While the weather turned cloudy in Kashmir on Saturday, the weatherman here has predicted five days of wet spell across Kashmir, expecting moderate snowfall in higher reaches from Dec 11 onwards.
Director Meteorological (MeT) department, Sonum Lotus said that from Dec 10 evening the state would receive light to moderate rainfall till Dec 11 evening. “From Dec 11 evening, there is possibility of moderate snowfall in higher reaches of the Valley while the plains would receive moderate rainfall,” he said.
According to the prediction, the plains won’t receive snowfall in these days. “There is prediction of wet spell from Dec 10 evening to Dec 14 morning following which the weather conditions would improve,” he informed.
Lotus further said that they are also expecting occasional sunshine on Dec 13 and Dec 14. “The weather would mostly remain cloudy during these two days but there would be occasional sunshine as well,” he said.
Director MeT also said that there would be further dip in day temperature and further rise in the night temperature during upcoming five days.
Notably, the wet weather here often results in closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway due to the slippery road conditions and landslides.
Recently, the three inches of snowfall at Sonmarg and other adjacent areas resulted in closure of Srinagar-Leh highway for two days.
On Dec 07, Divisional Administration Kashmir issued weather advisory according to which moderate to heavy snow is expected at most places in the State from December 11 to December 13, 2017.
“A western disturbance is approaching J&K and adjoining areas. This system is likely to affect J&K from 9th December onwards and produce moderate to heavy snowfall on 11, 12 and 13 December,” the advisory had said.
The advisory asked concerned Deputy Commissioners of Kashmir Division to take all the precautionary measures in their respective districts.
In view of winter, various meetings were held in Kashmir with higher ups asking the respective district administrations to finalize all the winter arrangements.
Meanwhile, the night temperatures improved in Jammu and Kashmir divisions, however, Leh continued to freeze at minus 13 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperatures in Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulwarg was 0.2,minus 1.5 and 0 degree Celsius respectively.
Kargil with a minus 8.4 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature, was the second coldest town in the state.
In the Jammu region, the minimum temperatures in Jammu city, Katra, Batote, Bannihal, Udhampur and Bhaderwah were 8.7, 9.9, 8.0, 2.9, 3.9 and 5.1 degrees Celsius respectively, the MeT official added.
