Srinagar: To thwart the protests called by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) against the US decision on Jerusalem, the district administration Srinagar on Friday imposed partial restrictions in Srinagar areas.

The administration imposed restrictions in Srinagar areas including Nowhatta, Mahraj Gunj and Safa Kadal areas to thwart the protests against US decision on Jerusalem, officials said.

The JRL including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for protests today against the US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Mutahida Majlis Ulema (MMU) headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had also called for protest today in view of the US decision.

Heavy contingent of Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in restriction bound areas who had erected the concertina wires on the roads, which halted the vehicular as well as the pedestrian movement.

Besides, the administration also disallowed the Friday congregational prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of old city here

“All the four gates remained closed throughout the day,” the local sources said, adding that the people were not allowed to offer the mandatory congregational prayers at the Jamia Masjid.

The head cleric of Jamia Masjid and Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq continued to remain under house detention from last evening.

Mirwaiz was placed under house detention soon after the JRL and MMU called for protests against the US decision.

Meanwhile, Mirwaiz took to Twitter and termed the curbs in Srinagar areas as ‘Shameful Operating Procedure (SOP)’.

“Once again the authoritarian  regime has resorted to its SOP #Shameful Operating Procedure of imposing restrictions and disallowing Muslims by force from offerings Friday prayers at #JamaMasjd and peacefully expressing their resentment against the US decision on #AQudsAlSharief,” Mirwaiz wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the protests against the US decision was carried out at several places in Srinagar and other districts of the Valley including Maisuma, Zadibal, Hassnabad, Budgam, Pulwama, Shopian and other districts.
