Srinagar: Police on Wednesday detained nine activists of right wing Shiv Sena after they tried to hoist a tricolour on the Clock Tower in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk.

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Shiv Sena has sent a team to Srinagar to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk following which security was beefed up in the area.

“As the few activists who had come in two private vehicles tried to march towards the Clock Tower, a posse of policemen bundled them in the already waiting police vans and shifted them to the nearby Kothibagh police station,” an eyewitness said.

Before arresting the protestors, state General Secretary of the Shiv Sena, Manish Sahni advised Dr Abdullah not to indulge in the anti-national activities and stop favouring Hurriyat.

Sahni said that Dr Abdullah is a leader of masses and “if he likes to come to power he should raise the issue of unemployment, upliftment of downtrodden and restoration of peace in the state.

Pertinently, police said that they were keeping an eye on the situation as they feared breach of peace. Police was already in know of the activists plans.

Meanwhile, police sources said that the Shiv Sena members were not detained but were prevented from creating law and order situation in the heart of the city.

“We did not arrest them nor were they detained. They were bundled in a vehicle and let free after some time,” a police official at Kothibagh police station said.

Abdullah had last week said, “They (Centre and BJP) are talking about raising the flag in PaK. I ask them to go and raise the tricolour at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. They cannot even do that and they are talking about PaK,” the flamboyant NC leader had said.
