Budgam: The shopkeepers and traders in Central Kashmir’s Magam town are facing economic losses after the electric transformer in the area got damaged two months back and has since not been repaired or replaced.

A group of shopkeepers and traders from Magam town in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district said that their business had been adversely affected in absence of electricity.

“The transformer at Magam town is lying defunct since two months .We complained about it to the concerned officials several times but no one has paid any attention which has resulted in great economic losses for us,”  President All Traders Association Committee Magam, Mohummad Yousuf Rangrez told ‘Kashmir Vision’.

“The area has many small scale business units, shops which are suffering at large in the absence of electricity”  Rangrez said, adding that the transformer has been repaired couple of times but unable to bear the load, it again gets damaged.

“We have requested the concerned authorities to replace the low capacity transformer of the town with a high one, so that it can bear the load of the all households and business units of the town but almost two months have passed and nothing has been done so far” the locals said.

“Power woes are badly affecting our  business in the town” another local who runs an Internet facility Centre said.

Pertinently, the locals and traders had on Monday held a protest demonstration and blocked Srinagar Gulmarg Highway at Magam for hours together.

The residents, shopkeepers and traders also threatened to block Srinagar-Gulmarg  highway again if PDD fails to restore regular power supply.

“We will again hit the roads if power supply is not restored at the earliest,”  an engraved shopkeeper said.

Meanwhile, Tehsildar Magam Mohammad Altaf  while talking to Kashmir Vision said that the issue will be resolved within few days as two separate transformers have been already allotted for the  town.

”Two transformers of 200Kv and 400Kv  capacity have been allotted, one for the residents and other for the traders, and in the coming days the issue will be resolved,”  Mohammad Altaf told Kashmir Vision over phone.
